Our History

In 1924, Americans were celebrating a post-war boom historians called the "Roaring Twenties." In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania- perhaps caught up in the national exuberance- two young employees from the Travelers Insurance Company decided to start their own insurance agency.

On July 1, 1924, Art Johnston and Ray Tucker opened the doors of the Tucker, Johnston Insurance Agency.  They believed success was inevitable if they worked hard, treated each client with integrity and respect and adhered to the principle that insurance be tailor-made to fit each individual client's needs.

Seventy years later, TJ&S transitioned to its third set of owners. Dick Farrell, owner of Farrell Benefit Consultants and Tom Whiteman, Executive Vice President of TJ&S, purchased the agency in 1994. Tim Faller also joined TJ&S in 1994 as an Employee Benefit Account Executive. He became a partner in 2000 and Executive Vice President of TJ&S in 2008.

Mark McCall and Richard Farrell, Jr. became partners in 2008. Mark is Vice President of Property & Casualty and Rich is Vice President of Employee Benefits. After more than 80 years of servicing large and small businesses alike, the current partners and all of TJ&S credit our success to our unique style of adhering to our founder's philosophy.

At TJ&S, we believe in partnerships, those between brokers and carriers, brokers and clients, or owners and employees, to be about fairness, honesty, dependability and knowledge. To put it more succinctly, it's about friendship.
